When I first envisioned this blog, my goal was to create a resource that was valuable and accessible to everyone, regardless of gender. While, as a woman, I naturally tend to gravitate towards topics that resonate more with feminine interests and experiences, it’s never my intention to exclude or overlook any segment of my audience and that includes men. I firmly believe everyone should feel welcome and empowered to participate.
With that in mind, I thought it would be beneficial to dedicate a post specifically offering some quick, accessible, and practical styling tips tailored for men and menswear. Whether you’re looking to refine your everyday look or explore new ideas, I hope these suggestions provide some inspiration and helpful guidance that are quick and easy to incorporate into your aesthetic.
Know your colors
One of the most important pieces of information that a man can use to elevate his wardrobe are knowing his colors. What does this mean? Well, there are certain colors and shades that look better on different people depending on things like hair color, skin color, eye color, etc. We women have been using this method for dressing for decades and you know what I’m talking about if you’ve ever heard a woman call herself an “Autumn” or a “Summer”—she’s referring to what colors look good on her, sir. I did write a post about color analysis here for your reading convenience.
Colors play a significant role in how we present ourselves through clothing. More than just personal preference, understanding how colors interact with your natural complexion can be a game changer for your overall aesthetic. This principle, commonly applied in women’s fashion, is equally powerful in menswear. By identifying your personal color season—determining whether you’re a Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter—men can unlock a new level of style sophistication.
Knowing which shades best harmonize with your skin tone, hair color, and eye color allows you to build a wardrobe that enhances your natural features, creating a more polished and confident appearance rather looking like you just threw something on and crawled out of a hole. Not to mention, it’s subtle enough that it won’t look like you’re trying too hard or aiming for attention. Investing time in discovering your color season is a simple yet impactful way for men to dramatically elevate their style and present themselves in a flattering light.
Match to your eyes
Finding the right colors to wear can be tricky, especially if you’re new to the idea of color analysis. It can feel overwhelming! But don’t worry, I’m going to share a super simple shortcut that can save you a lot of time and frustration if you’re struggling to figure out what works for you—men, dress to match your eyes. I know, it sounds almost too obvious, right? But think about it. If you have blue eyes, experiment with blues, purples, and other cool-toned colors that echo the shades in your irises. This doesn’t mean you have to wear a solid blue outfit, but incorporating these colors in your shirts, sweaters, or even accessories can make a huge difference.
Similarly, if you have brown eyes, gravitate towards warmer colors like browns, beiges, reds, and oranges. These earthy tones will create a harmonious look and enhance your natural coloring. And for those with green eyes, shades of green from are your best friend! You can also play around with other jewel tones like emerald, amethyst, and sapphire if you’re feeling a little more adventurous. But even sticking to classic greens will instantly make your eyes pop.
The beauty of this tip is its simplicity. You don’t need to be a fashion expert to pull it off. By literally matching your clothing to your eye color, you’re creating an immediate connection and highlighting one of your best features. Not only will it draw attention to your eyes—which is always a good thing—but it also signals to others that you pay attention to detail and have a sense of style. And let’s be honest, women will definitely notice that you know a little something about fashion, and the eye catching effect will naturally draw their attention to your face. It’s a win-win! So, give it a try! You might be surprised at how much of a difference it makes.
Tailoring & clean lines
Tailoring and clean lines are paramount for making a positive impression, and this holds particular significance for men. Historically, the emphasis on tailoring and sharp silhouettes was primarily associated with menswear, as women’s fashion often leaned towards looser, more flowing romantic styles. This historical context means that classic pieces like blazers, straight leg trousers, trench coats, and similarly structured garments were originally conceived and designed solely with the male physique in mind. These items were crafted to enhance and define the male form, highlighting both strength and confidence in the wearer.
While women’s fashion boasts a seemingly endless array of choices, this abundance can make it challenging to discern what truly complements one’s individual shape. Men, however, benefit from a more established and enduring aesthetic. The timelessness of menswear means a suit from generations past can still hold relevance today, providing a solid foundation for building a personal style. This isn’t to suggest that menswear is stagnant, but rather that its fundamental principles offer a reliable starting point, particularly for those navigating the often overwhelming world of fashion.
Tailoring simplifies the process of finding flattering pieces, as much of the groundwork for suiting various body types has already been laid for you. It wasn’t until much later that women began to “borrow” and adapt these traditionally masculine styles, integrating them into their own wardrobes and appreciating their ability to project a powerful and sleek image. Up your style effortlessly by swapping out that shapeless sweatshirt and bulky cargo pants for a tailored blazer or a classic peacoat. The structured lines will instantly broaden your shoulders, projecting an intentional image , transforming your look from casual to captivating.
Remember, presenting yourself well speaks volumes in both professional and personal settings. As for those distressed jeans clinging to your wardrobe—consider relegating them to household tasks. Investing in a pair of clean, straight leg jeans or trousers without holes is greatly encouraged. For those seeking to add height to their stature, straight leg trousers create a seamless line, elongating your legs. Even if you’re already blessed with height, these trousers maintain a polished silhouette, whereas ripped jeans can visually break up your figure, disrupting the illusion of length. So, men, embrace the heritage and inherent design advantages that come with well-tailored clothing—it’s a legacy designed to make you look your best.
Embrace Textures
Textures are one of the most important, yet often overlooked, aspects of menswear. Whether it’s the rugged knit of a chunky sweater, the sleek elegance of smooth leather, the subtle weave of a linen shirt, or the structured feel of corduroy pants, incorporating textures into your daily looks not only adds visual interest but also a tactile element that enhances your style to add dimension. Rather than relying solely on bold patterns and prints, which can sometimes be overwhelming, a simple change in texture can make all the difference in capturing the eye and creating a well crafted outfit.
Think about how the light plays differently on various surfaces—a matte wool will absorb light, while a glossy silk will reflect it, adding depth and dimension to your overall appearance. By carefully layering textures, you can create a more dynamic and engaging look, showcasing your personal style and attention to detail. Ultimately, mastering the art of incorporating texture is a key ingredient in building a well-rounded and stylish wardrobe.
It’s also worth mentioning that textures shouldn’t be relegated to a single season, like winter, but rather thoughtfully utilized year round. While the association of heavier textures with colder months is common, exploring a variety of fabrics across all seasons can create more dynamic looks. Lighter weight and breathable fabrics, such as linen and cotton, are excellent choices for spring and summer, offering comfort and visual interest with their inherent textures. Conversely, wools and fleeces, traditionally associated with warmth, add a cozy touch to fall and winter ensembles.
Sleek Solids
Okay, you all know how much I adore vibrant colors and bold patterns – they’re a definite staple in my wardrobe! However, let’s not underestimate the power of a well-chosen solid color especially as a base. Solids are a safe bet, offering a timeless elegance and versatility that works for virtually any occasion. Instead of always reaching for that loud print, consider building your outfit around impactful solid pieces.
The key to making solids exciting is all in the texture and the ability to layer them! Like I mentioned above, textures do wonder to add dimension to what might otherwise be an uninteresting look. Think of how nice a smooth tee shirt can look peeking out from beneath a knit cardigan. Layering will add depth and visual interest, creating a classic look that’s anything but boring. It allows you to express your personal style in a subtle yet impactful way, proving that sometimes, less really is more.
Solids offer a significant advantage in wardrobe versatility. Their simplicity allows for easy mixing and matching with a wider range of items, increasing the potential number of outfits you can create. Unlike prints, which can sometimes clash or require specific pairings, solids act as a neutral base, blending with various colors, textures, and patterns. This adaptability makes them a more practical and cost-effective choice for building a functional and stylish wardrobe. Therefore, incorporating a foundation of solid colored pieces ensures effortless outfit creation and maximizes the use of each garment.
Use accessories
Another effective approach to elevate your overall style is to incorporate classic menswear accessories into your outfits. These elegant pieces can include watches—which can serve as both a functional and stylish addition to any outfit. Scarves are another great option, especially during colder months, as they can provide warmth and a pop of color or pattern to an outfit. Sunglasses are a must-have accessory for sunny days, and they can also add a cool, laid-back vibe to your look. Hell, get a pocket square.
Other accessories to consider are leather belts, cuff links, hats, and tie clips, all of which can help to refine and complete your outfit with purpose. By incorporating these staple accessories into your wardrobe, you can add interest and polish to your personal style. They can be individual touches that highlight your unique taste, interests, and preferences without being too glaringly loud.
Jewelry for men is an often overlooked but incredibly valuable area of accessories ripe for exploration and self expression. Unlike popular belief that men shouldn’t indulge in sparkly things, jewelry has a history of being worn by men from different cultures and backgrounds—we Italians love it! Growing up, I was surrounded by men in my family who confidently sported jewelry, from striking birthstone rings to bold, golden Byzantine chain necklaces that always added a touch of regality.
Seeing their pieces, I’ve always felt that more men should embrace the opportunity to snatch themselves with something sparkly—something that reflects their personality and adds a touch of flair to their singular style. It’s time to break free from outdated notions and consider the potential that jewelry holds true for elevating the modern man’s wardrobe and shouldn’t be ignored. You don’t need to wait for marriage, get yourself a ring because life is always better with a little bling!
Style away
So, as I always like to say, I sincerely hope you found these tips helpful and that at least one idea sparked some inspiration and feels fun to try! This has been a fun little deep dive into menswear that I usually don’t get to explore and it’s been a refreshing change of pace—consider my horizons broadened!
Remember, fashion is all about personal expression and there’s absolutely no wrong way to dress, as long as you feel confident and comfortable. However, there are definitely some clever tricks and strategies you can use to make styling yourself much easier, quicker, more enjoyable, and ultimately, more you!
