STRAWBERRY BLONDE WITH STYLE

▎❝ Toxic manicures & clean nail polish. ❞

Big news is shaking up the beauty world, and if you’re a fan of a long lasting gel manicure, this is something you’ll want to pay attention to. The European Union has officially banned products containing Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), a common chemical used in many gel nail polishes. The ban, which took effect on September 1st, is a significant move that underscores a growing global concern about the ingredients we expose ourselves too. This action was taken because TPO was classified as a reproductive toxicant in a recent studies leading the EU to restrict its use in all cosmetics.

Though this ban doesn’t affect little old me here in America, I think this is such an important topic to cover on this blog. I’m hopeful that this research will prove helpful worldwide and that we can take Europe’s lead towards a healthier lifestyle. As my regular readers know, I’ve written other posts warning about the dangers of toxic cosmetics and why it’s important to prioritize clean beauty for your own wellbeing. With this recent news, it only makes sense that the next topic I’d cover is toxic nail polish so that’s exactly what I’m going to do! Don’t get depressed, though! I’ll give you some affordable clean nail brand recommendations you can shop to ease the sting.

Toxic nail polish

Nail polish, a ubiquitous cosmetic product that’s often overlooked for safety, has historically harbored a deeply concerning and pervasive array of toxic chemicals known to wreak havoc on the body. This chemical cocktail—often a silent threat—is most famously encapsulated by the “toxic trio,” but its dangers extend far beyond these three notorious culprits. These ingredients were originally incorporated to enhance desirable qualities like durability, shine, and quick drying properties, with less initial regard for their long-term health implications.

The most notorious members of this “toxic trio” include:

  1. Formaldehyde: A potent chemical recognized globally as a known human carcinogen, particularly linked to nasopharyngeal cancer with prolonged exposure. In nail polish, formaldehyde often served as a hardener and preservative, preventing chipping and extending the product’s shelf life. However, its vapor is a severe irritant, frequently triggering allergic reactions like contact dermatitis (rashes, itching, blistering) on the skin, burning sensations in the eyes, and respiratory issues ranging from sore throats and coughing to exacerbating asthma symptoms. Its pungent odor is often the first indicator of its presence.
  2. Toluene: This chemical, commonly used as a solvent to create a smooth finish and help the polish flow evenly, facilitating quick drying, is a powerful neurotoxin. Regular inhalation, especially in poorly ventilated environments, can lead to a cascade of neurological symptoms including dizziness, lightheadedness, headaches, cognitive impairment, and fatigue. Beyond its impact on the nervous system, toluene is also linked to significant respiratory irritation and serious developmental problems, particularly concerning for pregnant individuals as it can cross the placental barrier and potentially harm a developing fetus.
  3. Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP): Once a common plasticizer in nail polishes, DBP was added to provide flexibility, prevent cracking, and create a glossy finish. However, it is a well-established endocrine disruptor. This means DBP interferes with the body’s natural hormone systems, mimicking or blocking hormones, which can lead to a host of reproductive and developmental harms. These include, but are not limited to, male reproductive issues (such as reduced sperm count and quality), and potential developmental defects in children exposed prenatally. The use of DBP has been significantly restricted or banned in many consumer products globally due to these severe health concerns.

Beyond this infamous trio, other problematic ingredients frequently found in traditional nail polish formulations further compound the health risks:

  • Formaldehyde Resin: Often used as an alternative to pure formaldehyde, this ingredient can still release formaldehyde gas and is a common allergen, causing similar contact dermatitis reactions, especially in individuals already sensitized to formaldehyde.
  • Camphor: While giving polish a glossy finish and added flexibility, concentrated inhalation of camphor can induce dizziness, headaches, nausea, and even seizures in sensitive individuals.
  • Xylene: Another solvent, much like toluene, xylene contributes to a smooth application and quick drying. Its exposure can lead to similar neurotoxic effects, including headaches, dizziness, and irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract.
  • Parabens: These chemicals function as preservatives to prevent microbial growth in cosmetic products. However, parabens are also recognized as potential endocrine disruptors and have been a subject of concern due to studies suggesting a possible link to breast cancer, though research continues on this front. They can also cause allergic reactions.

The cumulative and insidious toll of regular exposure to these substances during frequent use is particularly acute for certain populations. Nail salon workers, often exposed daily for extended periods without adequate ventilation, face a significantly elevated risk of chronic health issues. Their consistent interaction with these chemicals, both through inhalation of vapors and dermal absorption, has been linked to higher rates of asthma, chronic respiratory illnesses, various cancers, miscarriages, and birth defects in their children. Frequent users of nail polish also face these risks, albeit typically at lower concentrations. Furthermore, pregnant individuals, children, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions are especially vulnerable to the adverse effects.

This growing awareness of the significant health risks posed by traditional nail polish formulations has spurred a powerful demand for and a critical shift towards safer alternatives. Consumers, advocacy groups, and health professionals have driven the market towards “3-free,” “5-free,” and progressively “10-free” (and even higher) formulas.

  • “3-free” formulations exclude the original “toxic trio”: formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate (DBP).
  • “5-free” expanded this commitment by also removing formaldehyde resin and camphor.
  • More advanced “7-free,” “10-free,” and even “20-free” formulas go further, eliminating additional concerning ingredients such as xylene, parabens, triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), ethyl tosylamide, and animal-derived ingredients, among others.

This proactive evolution in the nail polish industry reflects a crucial recognition of product safety and transparency. It empowers consumers to make more informed choices, significantly reduces the health burden on nail salon professionals, and signals a vital step towards healthier cosmetic practices, although continuous vigilance and research remain essential to ensure true product safety.

Toxic gel polish

While the allure of gel nail polish is undeniable—offering a high-gloss, chip-resistant manicure that can last for weeks—this remarkable durability and affordability comes at a potential cost to health, rooted in its complex chemical composition. The very formulation that allows the polish to cure into a hard, durable shell under UV or LED light often relies on a concerning array of toxic ingredients. It’s worth mentioning that UV lights themselves have been known to cause skin burns, premature aging, and damage that can lead to certain skin cancers.

A primary health risk stems from potent sensitizers—chemicals known to trigger allergic reactions. Foremost among these are HEMA (hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and di-HEMA trimethylhexyl dicarbamate. These acrylic monomers are common culprits behind allergic contact dermatitis, which can manifest not only on the fingertips as redness, itching, and swelling but also on more sensitive areas like the eyelids, face, and neck from inadvertent touching. In severe cases, these reactions can lead to painful nail bed damage, onycholysis (separation of the nail from the bed), and even permanent nail loss which is always fun, right?

Beyond these allergens, the historical standard for gel polishes includes many of the same toxic chemicals found in regular nail polishes that we already mentioned above. As the cosmetic market evolves, powerful shifts are taking place with consumers actively demanding greater ingredient transparency, stricter regulation, and the development of genuinely safer alternatives without sacrificing the performance that made products so popular in the first place.

Clean nail polish

Now that we’ve taken the time to walk through the hidden hazards that can be lurking behind the glossy doors of your neighborhood nail salon I think it’s only fair that we move on to a brighter, safer side of the nail care world. So, in the spirit of keeping you both beautiful and healthy, I’m going to dive into a quick list of clean beauty nail polish brands that steer clear of those nasty ingredients—I wouldn’t be a good Judy if I didn’t!

  • OPI Nature Strong: Many of you will be happy to learn that one of the biggest nail polish brands, OPI, actually has a designated clean nail polish line which is fantastic because it’s not only affordable but widely distributed and offers a full array of colors. This line is vegan, made with plant and mineral based ingredients, and follows the 9 free rule mentioned above.
  • Zoya: Zoya is a clean nail polish brand that abided by the 10 free rule and is clear of any major toxins used in other nail polishes. Not only is it vegan and cruelty free but it was one of the first brands to eliminate these toxins from their polishes making it a popular choice for non toxic and health compromising nail care.
  • Dazzle Dry: Dazzle Dry is a vegan and cruelty free nail polish brand free from harsh toxins. Hypoallergenic while striving for customer and environment sustainability, Dazzle Dry does include some gray zone ingredients such as fragrances and silicones but is still exempt from the harsh chemicals we’ve already discussed.
  • Ella & Mila: Ella & Mila is a clean nail polish brand that is vegan, cruelty free, PETA certified and USA made. This brand’s formula is 17 free meaning that it’s free of the 17 most harmful chemicals—including including formaldehyde—found in polish!
  • Sundays: Sundays is a clean nail polish brand that abides by a 10 free formula meaning that it’s free of 10 major harmful chemicals found in other nail polishes. It is non toxic, vegan, and cruelty free for a healthy nail alternative.
  • SHANY: Shany is my favorite nail polish brand though at the moment, you can only buy sets and not individual bottles. Clean, free of harsh chemicals, and affordable, I can say that it’s a good salon quality polish that I use myself and my mother approves too! Vegan and cruelty free, Shany is a proud member of PETA and has a firm commitment to not testing on animals which also extends to their suppliers, whom they require to be cruelty-free as well.

Last Call

Well, it’s been another week of shattering complacent cosmetics, demanding better from the beauty world, and ruining lives with some much needed honesty. I think that this ban is just the beginning of a conversation that desperately needs to be had about the true safety of every day products we’re using. This series has become such a passion of mine to write about because I wholeheartedly believe that beauty shouldn’t be deadly and we shouldn’t be paying companies to shorten our lives just so they can pad their pockets. Health should be the biggest and most popular beauty standard.

Like with other cosmetics, we don’t have to give them up simply because brands aren’t doing their due diligence to protect their customers. In my first clean beauty post, I didn’t give up my makeup, I gave up brands that didn’t care what they were peddling to me. You can still paint your nails and go to your favorite salon, just be careful which brands and services you’re patronizing. If your nail salon doesn’t offer clean polishes, take your own! Get a nice foot massage in peace knowing your toes won’t fall off. As always, I’ll be covering more clean beauty topics in the future but I hope this was helpful! If I missed any good clean nail polish brands, let me know and I’ll add them for everyone!
